In consenting to write an introduction to the Autobiography of one whom I have long known and honored, I desire to say that the nineteenth century has not been more remarkable for its discoveries in science, art, and all forms of material progress, than it has for the moral heroism of many men and women whose courage, faith, patience and self-sacrifice have done so much to promote justice and humanity, and for the advancement of the Redeemer skingdom. A mong these Christian patriots there is one whose long life of consecration to the good of his fellow men ought to be not only an example but an inspiration to the youth of our land. John G. Fee, of Berea, Ky., was born and raised under the influences of slavery and was surrounded by those powerfully conservative forces that held many good men to the defense of oppression. Perhaps no other institution ever did so much to pervert all sense of justice and to deaden all feelings of compassion as that which declares that under a republican government men might hold their unoffending fellow men in bondage. Chain them, and task them, and exact their sweat, With stripes that Mercy with a bleeding heart Weeps when she sees inflicted on a beast. Nay, more, it held that this right of property in man carried with it the right to set at naught the family relation and doom men to the perpetual ignorance of God and his word. The youth of our land can have little conception of the absolute control that half a century ago the system of slavery had on the minds and consciences of the nation.

Autobiography of John G Fee Berea Kentucky Classic Reprint John Gregg Fee Books

I found the true story of abolitionist minister John Gregg Fee to be both inspiring and historically important. Rev. Fee was the son of a slave-owning father who very early in life developed conviction that slavery was heinously wrong. He lived his convictions and was not afraid to speak the truth, even when confronted regularly with violent opposition. He chose to continue to live and share his views for many years in the slave state of Kentucky, despite the danger. His wife Matilda is also depicted as a kindred spirit, who shared her husband's vision and wasn't afraid to express that. Despite being confronted at times even with club wielding mobs, he refused to carry a weapon. (For a few years they took their family to Cincinnati for safety reasons, but returned to their beloved home state at end of Civil War). The book comes with the disclaimer that it is a reproduction which is scanned from original (which is a very old book). There are some imperfections and in places you must use imagination to get what original text must have contained due to blurred words, etc. I found it to definitely be worth the effort.

It was sent in a timely manner. The content was good. The printing quality seemed poor though. It was light and some places seemed to almost not be there. I don't know if that represented some old-fashioned kind of type, or if it really was just poor quality printing.
My mother attended Berea College in Berea, Kentucky and always admired the philosophy and mission of the school. She spoke of admiration of the school's founder so I bought the book to learn more about him. His story is amazing for the tribulations he endured as an abolitionist and staying true to his religious beliefs in the face of adversity. Modern day christians have a lot to learn from this man's struggle to be true to god's plan for him.
